About the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition

Because of its very accurate, literal translation, this is the version that is overwhelmingly used by Catholic scholars. Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch have made it the basis of their Ignatius study bible, Pope Benedict’s writings regularly cite this edition in the English translation, and the Catholic Catechism frequently quotes it as well.

The Catholic Edition is based only the original Revised Standard Version and the name could hardly be more fitting: it is a revision of a revision of the King James Bible. Perhaps you’re wondering a Protestant bible was chosen as the basis for a Catholic bible (especially since the original deuterocanonical books are missing).

When Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical “Inspired by the Spirit” in 1943, he urged translators to make use of the original Greek and Hebrew texts. Up until that time, Catholic translators relied very much on St. Jerome’s excellent Latin Vulgate translation. However, any translation, by its nature must be inferior to the original, and since the Revised Standard was both a solid translation and based on the original Greek and Hebrew, Catholics requested permission to publish a Catholic edition of this bible.

The permission was given, the deuterocanonical texts were added and minor changes to the translation were made where necessary. In 1965, the bible was given the imprimatur and published. A second Revised Standard Version- Catholic Edition was published in 2006 with minor changes and goes by the name RSV-2CE, although the names are often used interchangeably.
